Patient First team get baby blues

On Tuesday 26th April one of Patient First’s High Dependency Unit ambulances, with crew Becky Reeve and Ray Renshaw on board, was flagged down by a member of the public who needed urgent assistance. He was taking his daughter, who had gone into labour, to hospital.

Acting swiftly they moved the daughter into our ambulance, were joined by a paramedic, and then assisted in the safe delivery of the baby into the world. Mother and daugher were then taken by our crew to hospital.

Matt Larkin, Patient First's Managing Director commented: 'This is not the first time Patient First people have acted above their normal day to day duties to help the local community and it certainly won't be our last.

Becky and Ray were calm and professional and did a super job in what became a rapidly evolving situation. We're delighted to have been in the right place at the right time and been able to assist"

Mother and baby are reported to be doing very well.

Notes to editor

Patient First convey the highly specialist West Midland Neonatal Transfer Service (WMNTS) to collect newborn babies from hospitals within and outside the West Midlands area and take them to one of 16 neonatal units, where they will receive a higher level of care or to return to their home unit.

With over 7000 babies being born annually and over 1200 transfers required, some under blue light conditions, the choice of Patient First for this activity makes a difference to the way the service operates.
